The Silent Sacrifice: Navigating Personal Relationships on Your Path to Entrepreneurship
Jun 27, 2023
Everything comes with a price. Ever heard that old truth, "nothing worth having comes easy?" It's a hard reality. We often link these costs with cash, debt, and time. Launching a new venture, we're all hands on deck scavenging for resources. But there's another price that we conveniently ignore, and it's just as crucial as the good old standards. I'm talking about the toll on personal relationships.
Embracing the new, plunging into a major project, often means you have to buckle down and slog through it. It implies missing out on some good times. It means you're going to disappoint your friends, more often than you'd like. Just this past weekend, I had to break my little girl's heart by skipping a concert (Elle King, Ludacris, Jelly Roll - damn!), turn down my fishing pal's invitation to hit the waters, my golf buddy's offer to take a swing at the course, and an opportunity to join an incredible Krav Maga camp. The reactions were pretty much the same - and they sucked, big time.
But here's the deal. You can blow years yakking about the amazing things you're going to do, or you can actually get down and do them. If the hunger's real and the rewards trump the temporary sacrifices, then it's about time you got your ass on the grindstone and made shit happen. Sure, I could've had a fantastic weekend. I could have lunch and drinks with my buddies all week. I could also keep fantasizing about this incredible idea and how "one fine day" I'm going to nail it. And a year or two later, I'd probably be stuck in the same damn rut. Or...
I could harness my tenacity, zero in for a while, and turn my dream into reality. If I'm not happy with where I am, I need to make a move. The friends and family who genuinely care will rally behind me. Those who can't make room for me post-project, they don't matter. So yeah, there's going to be a cost to carving out the life you desire. You can either foot the bill, or keep daydreaming about what might have been. Just bear in mind, if you're craving a life different from your current one, you've got to switch up your game. I know I'm going to willingly pay that price, every single time.
